Here we are (Roel on the left and Jos on the right), in a black and white pose with Bamma, our 'intergalactical traffic policeman' and 'Mondriaan in New York'. Both painted according to our famous 'tic-tac' system. This means that together we set up the work ('quatre-mains') until the idea is ready as far as the form and content go. After that the work is finished by only one of us. This is the person who signes first. So a Roel-Jos has been finished by Roel, and a Jos-Roel by Jos.
The idea for 'tic-tac' (question and answer) painting spontaneously arose during a holiday together at friends in Spain. Making fast drawings together appeared to be an amusing, contagious and productive activity. We returned with five full sketchbooks, pleasantly suprised by the very funny creations that none of us would have come up with on our own.
Once we were back home we started to use the same method, only then with paint. This has since been shown by a whole series of paintings, each one completed with a unique matching frame, title and caption. These clarifying texts can be found on our certificate of authenticity - with signature and stamp - on the back of the paintings.

The artist duo Jos & Roel consists of Roel Khlen (left) and Jos van de Munckhof (right), both born and raised in Limburg (NL) in de sixties. At the beginning of the eighties they met in Maastricht, at the Academy of Applied Arts. It was right there in Maastricht that they laid the foundation of a collaboration that has continued to this very day. The result is a series of 'tic-tac' paintings, made together. These paintings are characterized by what Jos & Roel call 'Magic Humorism'; a combination of their love for primitive African, Asian and South American sculptures with a (occidental and personal) humoristic touch underneath.
By doing so they create contemporary and realistic sculptures. Mostly bright coloured fetishes. They show us how art, culture and humor from different periods and regions can go together very well.
